About The Artist
Jamie McCartney is a multi-award winning sculptor and the UK's leading lifecasting artist. He first started casting parts of his face and hands in wax over twenty years ago, whilst studying for his fine art degree. It was through working as a sculptor on feature films, though, that Jamie really developed his techniques.
Jamie then brought these film processes back into his sculpture studio. People became really intrigued by the speed and accuracy of this new portraiture technique and Jamie realised that he was onto something big. He has kept developing his techniques and his own unique style.
In addition to making casts of his clients, Jamie uses the process to create his increasingly recognised and controversial gallery works. He was awarded the 2007 Erotic Signature sculpture prize for The Spice of LIfe, which features in the glossy coffee table book, The World’s Greatest Erotic Art of Today Vol 1 and looks set for iconic status. April 2007 saw the opening in the West End of Amora, The Academy of Sex and Relationships, which features this and six more of Jamie’s sculptures on permanent display.
In 2008 Jamie's Internal Affairs was accepted into the permanent art collection of the World Famous Kinsey Institute. For this piece Jamie went where no sculptor has gone before to create a clear glass cast of the inside of a woman's vagina. The last taboo in sculpture? It is this willingness to go to extremes for his art, though, which sets Jamie apart. Creating a death mask of his father was perhaps his toughest and most poignant piece. Entitled After, Jamie auctioned the sculpture to raise money for a prostate cancer charity. His work often tends to feed into our curiosity and insecurities. working on many levels, both aesthetic and conceptual, there are always elements to intrigue and to captivate.
His neo-surrealist sculpture The Impossibility of Passion was runner up in the 2008 Erotic Signature competition and features in the The World’s Greatest Erotic Art of Today Vol II. His success two years running led Jamie to be elected as a juror for the 2009 competition. His stock, as they say, is rising…
An established artist, Jamie has exhibited in many individual and group shows and manages to juggle several artistic directions. He may be flavour of the month in erotic art circles, but his sweep is much broader than that. "I work with a lot of processes and like to keep it that way. I love to experiment in the studio and see what comes of it". Always evolving and developing new processes as he goes, Jamie's eclectic artworks are becoming something of a trademark.
